"Norway as a welfare state is dependent on us developing a society in which everyone can function well,” said cabinet minister Audun Lysbakken when presenting the jury that is to award Norway’s first national prize for universal design. Universal Design helps counteract discrimination against people with functional impairments while improving surroundings for the entire population. Since 2005, 17 Norwegian municipalities have been involved in a national development project under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment. They have been exploring and putting into practice universal design as a strategy for building local communities characterised by adequate accessibility, equality, participation and free choice for all. Now a comprehensive report has been compiled in which the municipalities share what they have learned with the rest of the country.

The Fourth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF4) was hosted by the Government of China and was held in the ancient city of Nanjing from 03-06 November 2008. The theme for the fourth session was: Harmonious Urbanization - The Challenge of Balanced Territorial Development. Universal design was one of the issues presented at the Norwegian stand at the Forum exhibition.
